Overview
Situated in Cecil County in the US state of Maryland, the town of Chesapeake is originally known as the City of Bohemia. In 1839, the city acquired the name of Chesapeake. This lovely and charming town has been able to restore lovely Victorian homes and architectural abodes. Some of these historic homes have been transformed into restaurants and museums today.
Things to Do
Tourists can take a tour of the C & D Canal Museum. The museum lets guests to have a glimpse on the interesting history of this 165-year-old canal. - Augustine Herman, a Bohemian colonist, gave the name Bohemian Manor or Village of Bohemia to the town of Chesapeake until the name was changed to ‘Chesapeake’ in 1839.
- When the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal was constructed, the town was divided into two sections–the north and south. The two sections of the town were connected via a drawbridge up until 1942.
- In 1966, the Old Lock Pump House right on Chesapeake and Delaware Canal was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Meanwhile, the South Chesapeake City Historic District was also recognized as a historic landmark by 1974.
