Contrary to popular myth, running a fever – a temporary rise in the body’s temperature – is not an illness but actually just a symptom. According to human medical anatomy, a person is said to have a fever if his or her temperature goes above 37.5-degrees (Celsius) or 99.5-degrees (Fahrenheit), sometimes bringing with it pain and the triggering of febrile seizures in some children – but what’s not commonly known is that a fever is the body’s way of fighting off bacteria and viruses that cause infections within the body.
In an effort to control high fevers, many people have been turning to more natural remedies as opposed to consuming copious amounts of over-the-counter medications like Tylenol, and some of these remedies have included the use of essential oils. If you have been looking for a better way to relieve those fevers for either yourself or a child – and to either prevent febrile seizures or to just feel better – consider the following immune boosting essential oils which have been proven safe and effective.
One of the quickest and most effective ways to reduce fever is with holy basil, with the ability of this herb to lower body temperature being similar to that of aspirin – the difference is that there are no adverse effects using holy basil, even after long-term exposure. What’s more, it is a proven antibacterial that can kill infection-causing microbes, which may represent a possible reason for the fever in the first place.
Starting with five drops of holy basil oil and one teaspoon of jojoba oil, you’ll want to blend the oils in a glass jar with a lid, cover the jar with its lid, shake to mix, put a few drops on the back of your neck and on the bottom of your feet and repeat three times a day for three to five days.
The oil of peppermint is extracted from a perennial herb that belongs to the Labiatea family, and is usually colorless but with a smidgen of yellowish or greenish-yellow hue. The oil’s cooling properties have proven useful for toning down a fever, while also being proven in scientific research to offer significant antipyretic activities.
On a cold towel, put five drops of peppermint oil, put the cold towel at the back of your neck and repeat several times daily until temperature drops.
An aromatic herb commonly used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products, spearmint is best known for is stimulant and carinative properties, its oil derived from its leaves using a distillation process that yields potent antiviral and antibacterial mechanisms. In treating fevers, spearmint kills the pathogens that may be causing the infection and the spike in body temperature; additionally, it can also help reduce fever as well as ease pain and inflammation.
Begin with preparing a bowl of water, ice cubes and five drops of spearmint oil; put the cubes in the bowl of water, soak a clean cloth into the water, wring it to squeeze excess water out, gently press the cloth on warm areas of the body such as armpits and the back of neck and follow this technique three to four times a day until fever subsides.
You don’t have to suffer from the uncomfortable sensations brought about by a nasty fever; reduce body temperature using these immune boosting essential oils and related products.
